Know who to call

The pipe under your yard isn’t a plumber’s job

Illinois law draws the line five feet outside your foundation. Inside it is a plumber’s drain. Past it is the building sewer, and that run to the city main is all we do. We will tell you plainly when a call belongs to a plumber instead.

Plumber, or Dig N Drain?

The problemPlumberDig N Drain
Dripping faucet, running toilet, a small leak–
Water heater or garbage disposal–
One sink or tub clogged with hair, or a toy down the drain–
Several drains backing up at once–
Slow drains, gurgling or bubbling, a sewer smell–
A soggy spot or a dip in the yard over the line–
Seeing inside the line with a camera–
Main drain cleaning and hydro jetting–
Digging up, repairing or replacing the sewer–

The camera goes in first

You see the problem before you pay for the fix

Before we dig – or recommend any repair – we show you exactly what’s going on inside your pipes.

Dig N Drain

Our monitor stamps every capture with the date and the footage from the clean-out. The two here are from May 2025: buildup sixteen feet in, and a joint nearly forty-three feet down the line. A locator on the surface then finds the camera head, so the excavator goes where the problem is.

How a camera inspection works
Sewer camera capture dated May 10, 2025 showing buildup 16 feet 8 inches into the line
16 ft 8 in. Buildup closing the pipe.
Sewer camera capture dated May 26, 2025 showing a lateral joint at 42 feet 11 inches
42 ft 11 in. A joint, and how far down the line it sits.

The same crew finds the problem and fixes it

No handing you off to a digging company once the camera finds a break. One call brings the commercial-grade jetter, the camera and the excavator.

Common sewer questions

What is the difference between a plumber and a sewer contractor?

A plumber works on the fixtures and pipes inside the house; we work on the line that carries it all away. Illinois law ends the building drain five feet outside the foundation, and the building sewer past that point, under the yard to the city main, is the pipe we clean, camera, repair and replace.

What should I do when my sewer backs up?

Stop using water right away, because every gallon comes back up the lowest drain. Keep people and pets out of it, then call (618) 444-9976; we answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are on a city system, a call to public works checks whether the city main is the problem.

How often should a main sewer line be cleaned?

A house with no symptoms has no fixed schedule. A line that backs up more than once, or a restaurant line taking grease, needs regular cleaning, and the camera shows how fast it builds up. Grease alone causes 47 percent of reported sewer blockages, according to the EPA.

How long do sewer lines last?

It depends on the pipe. Orangeburg, laid in houses until about 1970, was expected to last around 50 years under ideal conditions and is known to collapse; clay can last far longer but fails at its joints. A camera run from the clean-out shows which one you have and how it is holding up.

Does homeowners insurance cover a sewer backup?

Usually not. The Insurance Information Institute says sewer backups are not covered by a typical homeowners policy or by flood insurance; the coverage is bought separately or as an endorsement. Check your policy before the next storm, and ask your agent what limit the endorsement carries.

Why does Dig N Drain run a camera before every repair?

Because a sewer is underground and nobody can see the problem without one. The camera shows the break, the roots or the belly, its distance from the clean-out and its depth, and you watch it on the monitor. The repair is decided on that evidence, and you keep the photos and video.
