Who owns the sewer now
Illinois American Water bought Granite City’s collection system in 2020 and the treatment plant on March 11, 2024, for $86 million. The plant serves about 26,000 connections: roughly 10,500 in town and 15,500 more that reach it through other systems.
None of that changes who owns the pipe under your yard. The city’s wastewater page says the property owner maintains the lateral all the way to the connection with the sewer main, even if that point is out in the street, and repairs any break between the house and the property line.
Many houses here date from the 1950s, and so does the pipe
Census figures put the median Granite City house at 1958. That is the decade Orangeburg pipe was most popular, and the era of clay laterals joined with mortar. If you are buying here, or the basement drain has started to gurgle, a camera run tells you what is actually down there before you spend anything on repairs.
Dig N Drain was amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable people. Brandon was awesome I will definitely call them for all of my needs.
